Former president’s son charged for hitting his superior

Mark Remeliik, son of Haruo I. Remeliik, Palau’s first president, has been charged with two counts of assault and battery, attempted assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and misconduct in public office for punching Ellender Ngirameketii in the eye and for attempting to hit Ngirameketii with a pipe.

Ngirameketii is the Chief of Division of Marine Law Enforcement and Remeliik’s supervisor.Remeliik was summoned to appear in court on October 3 to face his charges.The information stated that Remeliik punched Ngiremeketii in the eye and on the back of his head on June 6, 2008.The information stated that Remeliik “did unlawfully attempt to commit assault and battery upon Chief Ngirameketii by means of a dangerous weapon, a pipe.”The information stated that Remeliik an officer employed by the Ministry of Justice, Bureau of Public Safety, Division of Marine Law Enforcement “did willfully neglect to perform the duties of his office as provided by law by being unable to perform his duties, after reporting for duty, due to intoxication and then subsequently, unlawfully committing assault upon his superior officer.”The affidavit of probable cause stated that Ngirameketii called police on June 6 and reported that one of his employees assaulted him at the Division of Marine Law Enforcement office in Malakal.The affidavit stated that Remeliik was intoxicated while on duty and that he operated the ship without proper authorization.The affidavit stated that when Ngirameketii ordered Remeliik to stand down, the defendant assaulted him.
