CPA to receive $1.9M for reconstruction of airport roadway

THE U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration will award the Commonwealth Ports Authority $1.9 million in airport terminal program or ATP funding for the reconstruction of a roadway at the Francisco C. Ada/Saipan International Airport.

CPA Board Chair Kimberlyn King-Hinds, in an interview, said it was a highly competitive grant for which CPA competed. “I am so proud of [our team’s] hard work,” she added.

FAA officials will discuss with CPA the details of the award when they meet next week.

According to the FAA, the purpose of the funding is to increase the capacity of the island’s international airport.

The grant will fund the reconstruction of an access road to the commuter terminal, and the purchase of new signs and markings.

FAA Deputy Administrator A. Bradley Mims said, “Today’s funding doesn’t just improve Francisco C. Ada/Saipan International Airport’s terminal. It creates opportunities in the community for good-paying jobs and a chance to be part of our country’s thriving aviation sector.”

The FAA said the airport terminal program is one of three aviation programs created by President Joe Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure law which provides $1 billion in annual airport terminal grants for five years.

The bipartisan infrastructure law, also known as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, makes a historic investment in our nation’s infrastructure and competitiveness, the FAA said.
