“THE dynamics between one’s family and fitness journey can be challenging,” said National Academy of Sports Medicine personal trainer Jerry Diaz.
“Everyone will experience, in some form, the hurdles of family inquiries and misunderstanding or misconceptions about your fitness program, especially when it deals with changes in routine and daily habits that will affect others in the household,” he added.
Conversely, he said, it is helpful to have family members who are supportive and are willing to approach the world of fitness and proper nutrition with you.
Before Diaz provides fitness and nutrition advice or programming to clients, he said it is essential to know and understand each person’s family background.
He said proper nutrition is crucial to any fitness program. But “when you adjust your meals, some family members may not like it,” Diaz added.
He said it is important for then to understand why you’re making changes to your food intake, including the types of food you eat.
Diaz said one must try to work with family members in making meals simple, interesting and nutritious all at the same time.
In addition, individuals striving to stay consistent with their fitness journey need emotional support from their family and friends, Diaz said.
Providing motivation and encouragement during difficult and challenging times are important for an individual to maintain a sense of purpose.
His or her family must understand the challenges facing someone who is trying to stay fit and healthy.
Hence, it is important for an individual going through a fitness and nutrition journey to talk about it with his or her family members, Diaz said.
“You can also ask them to join a sporting event, or to get lean and fit by starting a new healthy lifestyle with you,” he added. “Sharing with family members the challenges and benefits of a fitness and nutrition program is the first step to success.”
