FOR assaulting his wife, Venusto Mangarero, also known as “Jesus Malus,” was sentenced to one year in prison, but all suspended except for 30 days.
Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo, in a judgment and commitment order issued on March 2, 2023, also gave Mangarero credit for 10 days for time already served. This means the defendant will serve 20 more days in prison.
Mangarero, 66, was ordered to report to the Department of Corrections on March 6, 2023 at 5 p.m. to start serving his sentence. He will be released from custody on March 26, 2023 at 5 p.m., and placed under supervised probation for two years.
In addition, he will pay a $280 probation fee and perform 60 hours of community work service.
According to the judge, the Office of the Adult Probation will have the Community Guidance Center evaluate the defendant within 30 days for any recommended course of treatment focused on anger management, mental health evaluation, drug treatment and alcohol.
The defendant must complete all recommended counseling and treatment, the judge added.
At the change of plea hearing, Mangarero was represented by Chief Public Defender Douglas Hartig while Chief Prosecutor Chester Hinds appeared for the government.
Initially, Mangarero was arrested and charged with assault and battery, strangulation, and disturbing the peace.
Police said the incident occurred in the early morning of Dec. 3, 2022.
According to the wife, Mangarero accused her of having an affair and of hiding her phone from him. She said she almost blacked out when Mangarero choked her.
