Our Commonwealth 670 launches essay-writing contest for high school seniors

OUR Commonwealth 670 or OCW 670 is inviting graduating high school students to participate in its annual Retta Sue Hamilton and Jacinta M. Kaipat scholarship contest.

Hamilton (1973-2021) was a lifelong advocate of animals and the environment while Kaipat, who passed away on Feb. 22, 2023, at the age of 61, was a former House member who, among other things, was also the first Refaluwasch woman to become a lawyer and was one of the founders of Beautify CNMI.

OCW 670 is a grassroots community group that advocates for “the de-escalation of militarization throughout the Marianas archipelago.”

Participants of the competition are required to write a 250-word essay or less on what college they have been accepted into, and how their studies will prepare them for future work and/or activism toward their goal.

Two winners will be chosen by the OCW 670 board and each will receive $1,000. The selection will be final.

To qualify, students should be  pursuing degrees in environment or public health, public policy and governance, diplomacy, political science or other courses in line with OCW 670’s goals.

The two winning students must have the intention to complete their college degree.

To submit your entry, email your essay to ourcommonwealth670@gmail.com no later than April 30, 2023.
