SAIPAN International School 1 and Saipan Southern High School 2 started the PSS-NMIVA Interscholastic Volleyball League with a bang as they triumphed in three-set matches against their respective opponents on Tuesday at the Marianas High School gym.
SIS 1 came out victorious in an exciting match against Mount Carmel School 1, 15-21, 21-16, 15-12.
Both teams played as equals and exchanged several spike finishes. In the first set, MCS 1 played aggressively and worked through the three-touch technique, constantly setting up Derek Sasamoto for the spike finish. Adding a few mix-ups to throw off SIS 1, MCS 1 secured the first set by a comfortable distance, 21-15.
However, in the second set, SIS 1 gradually wore down MCS 1.
SIS had a lot of firepower to work with as Omari Joab, Dongyeon Kang and Will Sosa led the attacks. They also had the ability to finish with powerful spikes while the rest of their team mates provided support with well-timed blocks and saves.
Although MCS 1 fought back, SIS bagged the second set, 21-16, to force a third and final set.
SIS rode the momentum while MCS gave it their all as a team. In the end, SIS bagged the required number of points to win the set and the match, 15-12.
In another hard-fought game, SSHS 2 slipped past MHS 3, 21-17, 20-22, 15-12.
Also joining the winner’s circle were MHS 1 which bested SSHS 1, 21-9, 21-18; MHS 2 which defeated Agape Christian School 2, 21-4, 21-14; and Grace Christian Academy 1 which outplayed Kagman High School 1, 21-15, 21-18.
