Senator, DPW, CUC look into road hazard in Tanapag

SENATOR Celina R. Babauta on Friday met with officials of the Department of Public Works- Technical Division Services and  Commonwealth Utilities Corp. personnel on Middle Road in Tanapag to inspect a road hazard there.

They discussed the concerns of residents and motorists in the area regarding the flooding on a portion of the road adjacent to Pacific Marine and Industrial Corporation.

Babauta said the area is a known road hazard to residents of the northern villages of Saipan, especially during inclement weather.

“Just last week as I was driving to the north, this small stretch of road along the main thoroughfare was coned off for the safety of motorists.  This area has become not only a health hazard due to stagnant water, but also a hazard to motorists,” Babauta said.

DPW said flooding in the area occurs even during the dry season.

CUC staffers, for their part, conducted a field water-chlorine test to identify the source of the water.

It was determined that it was coming from a naturally occurring water spring north of the area.

Babauta said her office “will be coordinating with DPW’s engineers and staff to develop a flood mitigation plan for this area and work toward a permanent solution to this safety hazard.”
