SAIPAN Mayor Ramon “RB” Camacho said marriage license applications submitted to his office should be reviewed thoroughly to avoid marriage fraud.
“Marriage is only for two people in love. It should not be used for fraudulent purposes,” he added.
Camacho said his team is working with a legal counsel in reviewing the current marriage application requirements.
Right now, he said those who want to get married at the mayor’s office are required to be at least 18 years old and must present two valid IDs, photographs and a signed application form.
The documentary requirements do not include any proof of divorce if one or both applicants were previously married.
Camacho believes the process should be revisited and each application should be reviewed thoroughly to avoid future divorces and marriages “conducted for other purposes.” These include marrying for a “green card.”
“I will not allow fraudulent marriages under my term,” the new mayor said.
“My advice to community members especially to our local residents: get to know each other well and do not get married for any reason other than love,” he added.
