Rota local bill to rename health center chapel in honor of former Senate president

THE Rota Legislative Delegation has passed a Senate local bill that would rename the Rota Health Center’s Divine Mercy Chapel as Julian S. Calvo Divine Mercy Chapel.

Authored by Sen. Teresita A. Santos, S.L.B. 22-15 recognizes and appreciates Calvo’s “exemplary service and significant contributions” to Rota and for his “compassion and devotion to help improve the lives of the people of Rota.”

Calvo served as Rota senator in the 1st to 5th CNMI Legislatures. He was the Senate floor leader in the 3rd Legislature and the Senate president in the 5th.

He also served as acting governor, Rota Municipal Council member, Rota Health Center acting resident director, health consultant of the Rota mayor’s office, and Public Health Services resident director.

According to the bill, Calvo, along with his wife, the late Lydia Diaz Calvo, “envisioned building a chapel at the Rota Health Center to help meet the spiritual needs of the patients. The chapel would serve as a solemn place to focus on spiritual strength and encouragement.”

The former senator was also “instrumental in ensuring that the chapel reached fruition and that the Rota Health Center’s patients and visitors had a private place of worship.”

In addition, former Sen. Calvo is “a successful entrepreneur who is active and contributes to his people and community,” and has been a “key figure in the most important policy issues over the past 50 years, conducting himself with professionalism and civility, and delivering results that have made a positive difference in the lives of [the people of Rota].”

All three members present for the Rota Legislative Delegation session voted in favor of the bill’s passage. Sen. Victor B. Hocog was absent. The other delegation members are Sen. Paul A. Manglona and Rep. Donald M. Manglona.
