NMI judiciary celebrates Commonwealth Cultural Day

THE local judiciary on Friday celebrated Commonwealth Cultural Day by showcasing Micronesian, American, Asian and European cultures through handicrafts, attires, art and delicacies.

The event featured mwaar and bead makers, a basket weaver, and performers such as the Te Ivi Maori and Marianas High School Poksai Chamorro dancers.

The turnout was “awesome,” said Irene San Nicolas, chair of the Judiciary Commonwealth Cultural Day Committee.

She attributed the success of the event to the judiciary staffers.

“The second annual event was well thought [out], and we had all the judiciary staffers involved,” she added.

“It’s really a team effort . . . . Everyone was involved. It’s only our second annual celebration, and hopefully we’ll make it better and better each year,” San Nicolas said.

The event was held in the atrium of the Guma’ Hustisia or House of Justice in Susupe, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 7.

This year, the CNMI marked Commonwealth Cultural Day on Monday, Oct. 10. It is an annual celebration of the heritage and the diversity of the Northern Marianas.
