TINIAN — On Sept. 16, 2022, the Tinian JROTC Stallion Battalion gathered to assist in cleaning up the Fiesta Grounds, Jones Beach, and Natibu Park for the International Coastal Cleanup this year.
Thirty-five cadets participated in picking up trash throughout the designated locations, as well as sorting out aluminum cans and plastic bottles that will be used for our battalion’s PBL Recycling Project. The purpose of the cleanup is to ensure that our islands and beaches stay clean in order to keep our island beautiful, with the waters clean, and marine life thriving.
Many cadets found this beneficial to our environment. “My opinion on the coastal cleanup is that it should be something that is done at least twice a month. It is important to keep not only the island, but the world safe and clean as well,” C/2LT Tano King stated.
“It was a good way to show that we want to keep our island clean,” said C/PV2 Matthew Sarmiento.
According to C/CPT Gio Vergara, “We do this in order to keep our island clean, to make sure there is no trash around our beautiful beaches, and so that our environment would be less polluted.”
In the future, Tinian JROTC may participate in more cleanups during events such as Taga Fest, Pika Fest, BBB, and much more.
“I want to participate in JROTC activities…to help the environment,” said C/PV2 Isa Dosalua.
We asked cadets how we could improve future events. C/PV2 Paolo Roldan stated, “We can improve future events like this if we go farther to pick up more trash.”
C/CPT Saim Ali said, “Getting to more remote locations such as Long Beach or areas like that, then we would make more of an impact.”
We’d like to thank Mr. Edwin Hofschneider and the Division of Coastal Resources Management for allowing us to take part in the International Coastal Cleanup. We also hope to conduct more cleanup events like this in order to maintain the beauty of the island, beaches, and keep marine life thriving!
