Shane Alvarez, Corry Pangelinan shine in final round of points race series

SHANE Alvarez and Corry Pangelinan took the spotlight in the seventh and final round of the 2022 Monster Energy Points Race Series on Sunday at Cow Town Raceway Park.

Alvarez claimed first place overall in the Expert Open class with a perfect run  as he ended both heats in first place.

Although it was a tough race with no room for error, he still had enough confidence to gain huge hangtime during jumps while pulling tight turns to earn a perfect 50 points.

His father and fellow racer Cuki Alvarez forced Shane to look back a few times, but Cuki had to settle for second place overall as he finished in second place in both heats for a total of 44 points.

In third place overall was Ellery Cruz who finished third in both heats for a total of 40 points followed by Patrick Togawa in fourth place with 34 points and Dave Celis in fifth place with 33 points.

Intermediate Class

Corry Pangelinan recorded a flawless 50-point finish to secure overall first place in the Intermediate Class.

Tristan Sablan shadowed Pangelinan throughout the race but failed to gain the advantage and had  to settle for second place with 44 points.

In the battle for third place, Henry Camacho Jr.  beat Melvin Cepeda by placing third in heat 2 to break their tie. Both had 38 points.

Novice Class

Sharing the podium finish was Aric Cruz who topped the Novice Class with 44 points, edging Ethan Yumul who placed second with 43 points. Joseph Santos outraced Bob Ferrer in heat 2 to clinch third place. Both had 40 points.

Veterans Class

In the Veterans Class, Champi Villacanes was number one with a total of 47 points followed by Cuki Alvarez in second with 45 points and Dave Celis in third with 42 points.

Big Boy ATV Class

In the Big Boy ATV Class, Christian Camacho solidified his top ranking with another 50-point performance while Henry Camacho took second place with 44 points and Rex Susulin came in third with 40 points.

Another successful season

With the final round of the series completed, Cuki Alvarez, who is also the MRA vice president, said: “The 2022 season was an amazing success! We had awesome support from DPW, the mayor’s office and MRA members in upkeeping the track and facility and had a great rider turnout in all classes and a great fan turnout as well. There were no serious injuries and everyone who registered was able to finish the season.”

He added, “We didn’t have anything too specific or special in the last race, but the race was running really smooth with no issues and everyone had a great final round. There were some minor changes made to the track, but nothing major. All the racers and race fans enjoyed the race action!”

Next is the awards banquet which will be held on Sept. 10 at PIC to officially and formally close the season.

“Then we will focus on our Goodwill Fun Race on Thanksgiving Day weekend for the annual Turkey Cross MX Challenge,” Cuki said. “There will be over 30 riders coming over from Guam to compete against MRA riders. It will be our 1st ‘international race’ since 2009.”

MRA, he added, “would like to thank DPW, the Saipan mayor’s office and all the lawmakers and anyone else who helped improve Cow Town Raceway Park in one way or another. Also, Monster Energy and PTC for all their donations and sponsorship in the 2021 and 2022 seasons.”

The rest of the round seven results will be featured in the next editions of Variety.
