Man charged with sexually abusing a minor

RODNEY Olopai Laniyo, who is accused of sexually abusing a minor, appeared before Superior Court Associate Judge Wesley Bogdan on Tuesday for a bail hearing.

Judge Bogdan imposed a $100,000 cash bail on Laniyo who was charged with sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree, sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree, sexual abuse of a minor in the third degree, and incest.

Laniyo was represented by Assistant Public Defender Vina Seelam while Assistant Attorney General Carmen Borja appeared for the government.

After the hearing, Laniyo was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections and was ordered to return to court on Aug. 17 at 10 a.m. for a preliminary hearing, and on Aug. 22 at 9 a.m. for an arraignment.

The complaint against Laniyo details years of abuse from the time the victim was 5 years old to when she was a teenager.
