MHS to resume classes today

School security guard Efren Ballesteros was found dead on campus, prompting the school to suspend classes for two days to allow police to gather evidence at MHS.

Commissioner of Education. Rita A. Sablan yesterday said the Public School System was saddened by the tragic incident that involved a security guard from Global Security Services who was on duty at MHS.

“We extend our condolences to the family of the beloved security guard,” Sablan said. “Because this  incident happened on campus, classes were canceled on Tuesday and Wednesday upon the  request of the Department of Public Safety as its officers investigated the matter.”

Sablan said DPS informed them yesterday noon that police had completed their on-site investigation on campus.

PSS, she added, was unable to release any information pertaining to the loss of school assets pending the completion of the police investigation.

Sablan said she is grateful for the quick response of the police in assisting MHS to avoid a “public display of the unfortunate and tragic incident.”

MHS principal Karen Borja, said they will have half-day classes today as report cards are also scheduled to be distributed.

Like Sablan, Borja declined to disclose any information regarding the homicide case.

However, she said “police have finished processing investigation.”

Worried about the possible impact of the incident on  students, Borja said MHS will intensify counseling efforts for its students, teachers and support staffers.

MHS, she added, doesn’t have enough security guards.

School security gets one-third of the school’s yearly budget.

“This is where we need more community support,” Borja said. “Our schools need the help of community members. Let’s protect our children, their belongings, and ensure they’re safe on our campus.”

If MHS gets $75,000 for its yearly operation, she added, about $24,000 will be used to hire security guards.

Borja said MHS is extending its condolences to Ballesteros’ family.

Ballesteros, 45, had been working for Global Security Agency for the past three years.

He suffered several body injuries and blunt trauma.

The police are looking into two possible crimes — homicide and burglary.
