Flea market enjoys brisk sales as economy sinks

“Sales are good,” Divine Sotto, administrative assistant for Biz Aid Saipan Interprises Inc. said in an interview.

“We are getting more clients both in stall rentals and customers each Saturday. With the economic downfall, the people may have found the flea market a better option to buy goods,” Sotto said.

She added that more than five establishments have made month-long reservations for stall rentals.

“We get positive feedback from vendors. Some of them even sold as much as $400 on a Saturday,” Sotto said.

Biz Aid Saipan Inc. president Yoshiro Kishimoto said the flea market was patterned after Japan’s.

Vendors display their wares and merchandise ranging from electronic items, clothes, shoes, books and other goods.

“A flea market is different from a garage sale. In Japan, the roads are closed for the flea market on Saturdays and there are programs and presentations to entertain the shoppers and that’s what we are trying to come up with here,” Kishimoto said.

He added that they want the flea market going on for the next six months or so.

“This is a good place for the vendors and buyers to meet, and we try to make everybody look forward to the next Saturday’s events,” he said.

The flea market opens from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in front of the Marianas Business Plaza in Susupe on Saturdays.
