French official on Pacific tour this week

Oceania Flash reports his four-day trip will include meetings in Canberra, with Australian foreign affairs ministers Stephen Smith and French business leaders established in New South Wales.

Jégo is also planning to meet Australia’s parliamentary secretary for Pacific islands affairs who will travel to New Caledonia to take part in a regional meeting of French ambassadors and high Commissioners based in the Pacific region.

In New Caledonia, the French junior minister will also hold meetings with a wide range of political, socio-economic and union stakeholders.

He would chair a regional conference dedicated to regional cooperation between the French Pacific and its neighboring countries, with a view to better integrate New Caledonia, French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna into their regional environment.

In Wallis, Jégo will pay his first official visit to France’s farthest-flung overseas territory. He will meet the king of Wallis, the Lavelua, Kapiliele Faupala, as well as religious, political and business leaders.

The French government member is also planning to meet a group of traditional leaders known as the “renovators” and who were strongly opposing the recent crowning, in July, of Faupala as king of Wallis. He will also be briefed on Wallis and Futuna’s progress to prepare the 2013 Pacific Mini-Games.
