Gov. Benigno R. Fitial on Thursday asked the community to join the islands in commemorating those who sacrificed their lives in different wars.

“On Veterans Day, we give thanks to those who have served freedom’s cause; we salute the members of our armed forces who are confronting our adversaries abroad; and we honor the men and women who left America’s shores but did not live to be thanked as Veterans,” said the governor. “We will never forget them.”

Veterans Day was first observed in 1919 in the United States in honor of those who perished during World War I where about 40 million died from 1914 to 1918.

That war ended when  the armistice was signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.
