PNG has new chief justice

Sir Salamo, from Enga province, has been the deputy chief justice since 2003.

Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare said in a statement that his cabinet had appointed Sir Salamo to hold office for a period of 10 years. “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Justice Injia on his appointment to this high office,” Sir Michael said.

“The cabinet has recognized his distinguished services and contribution towards the judicial system in this country. Therefore, the government has entrusted him with this mammoth responsibility to ensure the judiciary continues to function effectively,” he said.

“I trust with his level of experience and commitment, Sir Salamo Injia will do his utmost as the new chief justice of Papua New Guinea,” the prime minister added.

Justice Injia graduated from the University of PNG with a law degree in 1982. He also holds a masters of law from the Harvard Law School.

Sir Michael also acknowledged the outgoing Chief Justice Sir Mari Kapi for his services. “Let me also pay tribute to Sir Mari Kapi for a job well done. It was unfortunate that he had to retire early due to ill-health. Nevertheless, I would like to wish him all the best in his endeavors,” Sir Michael said.

Sir Injia’s appointment was effective as of Oct. 31.
