Revised airport generator project to cost $6.8M

For this project, CPA’s management selected GPPC Inc., the same firm that was earlier awarded the contract for the former generator project.

Camacho said CPA will sign a contract with GPPC before Dec. 15.

“We’re now discussing with the contractor, which had the lowest bid of $6.8 million, about the approach that we would like to take on this [revised project],” he told Variety yesterday.

AIC was the other bidder.

According to Camacho, because the funding available for the project is less than what is now required, CPA will propose a multiple-year funding scheme for the project.

The Federal Aviation Agency approved $2.1 million for a third generator for the Francisco C. Ada/Saipan International Airport.

CPA later decided to cancel the request for proposal to include the airport tower control, the airport rescue and firefighting facility, and the emergency power grid in the area.

Camacho said CPA and GPPC have started negotiating.

“It’s going to be a multiple-year funding because the funds available are less than the required amount which is $6.8 million…and so we’re needing about $4 million more. The FAA considers this undertaking a very critical project,” he added.

Camacho said GPPC “is open to the scenario where we will sign off on the $2.1 million and they can get going and before the fiscal year ends money will be appropriated and identified again for the project.”

CPA expects the completion of the project in early 2010.
