CPA says airport generators up before Christmas

The two units are scheduled to be installed and switched on four days before Christmas.

“Our target is to have it up by Dec. 21,” Camacho said. “The two components are on their way here from the West Coast.”

He said this is the first time that CPA’s two main generators have been attended to.

The federally funded repair work for both units took five months and costs more than $200,000.

CPA’s failure to provide enough power supply at the airport posed a great risk to airlines and passengers.

The airport, like other establishments on island, was affected by the frequent power outages before the government installed the Aggreko generators last September.

CPA has two main generators providing electricity to the terminal operation.

However, both units have broken down and only one generator is sustaining the operation at the site since  July.

This unit can only provide power to the runway and the navigational lights including the federally approved instrument landing system.

With the approval of the third back-up generator by the Federal Aviation Administration, Camacho said CPA will soon reduce and minimize the affect of its lack of backup generators.

The delivery and of the third generator is expected in early 2010.

Camacho said CPA will soon use its new baggage handling system as the Transportation Security Administration is scheduled to certify the million-dollar equipment this month.
