San Antonio to submit 4 entries to islandwide science fair

The school’s other entries are projects involving sprouting carrot tops, sounds, and a color changing milk, said Hilda Rios, this year’s SAES Science Fair and Health and Wellness Committee chairwoman.

Rios said there were a total of 12 entries selected from 15 classrooms.

“This year’s Science Fair and Health Day was a tremendous success,” she added.

The students who will represent their school in the islandwide competition are Alannah Mae Carreon Sablan, first grader, recycling paper; Paula Mae Francisco, second grader, sprouting carrot tops; Stephen Barro, fourth grader, sounds; and Sina Palacios, sixth grader, color changing milk.

On Wednesday, the school evaluated the entries based on creativity, understanding, clarity, dramatic value and technical skills.

Yesterday, the students were asked to present, discuss and defend their projects before the judges.

The other entries displayed were: “How to make a magnetic field visible” by first grader Jerry Olkeriil, who placed second; and “My five senses” by kindergarten student Lana, Mendiola, who placed third.

The other entries for the second-third grade category were “The inorganic and organic,” by second grader Christian Espinosa, second place; and “A switch of electrical circuit” by third grader Christopher Aninzo, third place.

“Colored flowers” by fourth grader Mea Indalecio placed second while “Density” and “Dancing drops” by fourth grader Torinett Marie T. Camacho and fifth graders Krizel V. Manuzon and Amy J. Liu, finished third.

“Pretty flowers” by sixth grader Yvonne Indalecia and “Peanut power” by sixth grader Leezle Iglecias finished second and third in their category.

The judges were SAES staff member Sybilla Guerrero and SAES family member Marlon Cabrera for the K-first grade category; Christy Sablan and Pamela Sablan both from Council on Development Disability for the second-third grade category; Cole Pritchard of the Pacific Islands Club and Gus Camacho of the Division of Environmental Quality for the fourth and fifth grade category; and Tony Benavente of the Saipan mayor’s office and retired SAES teacher Merly Yamazaki for the sixth grade category.

The categories for the islandwide competition are: Life Science; Physical Science; Earth and Space Science; and Health/Nutrition/Medical Science.

The most outstanding projects will compete at the Guam Science Expo.

Starting today all winning entries from the different schools will be displayed at Marianas High School’s gymnasium.

The awarding ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 1 at the same venue.
