San Antonio school to hold Science Fair, Health Day

Yesterday, each of San Antonio’s 15 classrooms selected their top three projects that will be exhibited today, when SAES also celebrates Health Day.

Hilda Rios, Science Fair coordinator, said they will select winning entries — one from kindergarten; two from second and third grades; one from fourth and fifth grades; and one from sixth grade.

Each public school will then submit five of their winning projects, she said.

Rios said they are expecting to get another award for this year’s islandwide Science Fair that will be held by the Public School System.

Last year, San Antonio got two awards.

Rita Carreon, a kindergarten teacher, said of her 20 students, 12 submitted projects.

The projects will be judged based on creative ability, understanding, clarity, dramatic value and technical skill,

Carreon said the projects must also meet guidelines established by the Science Fair Committee.

During the selection process in every classroom, students were allowed to submit their projects to their teacher, and to present and defend their entries.

In the islandwide competition, projects will be placed in one of four categories: Life Science; Physical Science; Earth and Space Science; and Health/Nutrition/Medical Science.

Student participants will compete in five grade cluster groups — Level 1: Grades K-1; Level 2: Grades 2-3; Level 3: Grades 4-5; Level 4: Grades 6-8; and Level 5: Grades 9-12.

The most outstanding science projects will compete at the Guam Science Expo.

For the Health Day celebration, Rios said they are expecting representatives from different government agencies who will conduct brief lectures and demonstration about health.

She said there will be a class and field presentation by representatives from the Red Cross, the Department of Public Safety, the Division of Sports and Recreation, the Department of Public Health, Northern Marianas College- Cooperative Research Extension and Education Service, and the Northern Marianas Protection & Advocacy Systems Inc.
