Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare and Fiji’s interim Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama had agreed to a Feb. 10 meeting to accommodate Bainimarama’s request.
This was after the Pacific Island Leaders Forum chair and Niue Premier Toke Talagi over-ruled a decision by Sir Michael to defer the recent meeting to a later date.
The Pacific Forum Secretariat in Suva said there was no such meeting as it was not part of the Port Moresby outcome.
PIFS media officer Johnson Honimae said there was a suggestion by Fiji and PNG to have this meeting so that Bainimarama could attend but this will not eventuate.
Honimae said the Pacific leaders agreed that there was no need for that meeting as the Ministerial Contact Group would continue to monitor Fiji’s situation.
Talagi had said the Forum had not excluded Bainimarama in the dialogue process but instead gave him every opportunity to be part of the process.
