18 NMI entries to compete in Guam Science Expo

GTC’s three entries will be among the 18 CNMI projects that will compete in the Guam Science Expo in March.

With 18 entries, Teresita A. Reyes, overall science fair chairwoman, said the CNMI has a big chance to win awards on Guam.

Last year, CNMI had five entries only and won two awards.

“It’s a very competitive event,” Reyes said.

There were 86 entries that competed in five group levels for the categories of life science; earth and space; medical, nutrition and health; and physical science.

All five entries of each participating schools were displayed during the open house at Marianas High School’s gym after the 18 judges completed their review and examination.

PSS Science Health and Wellness Learning Community chairwoman Sharleen Crisostimo said this year, the event was more organized.

Reyes said among the 20 public schools only Rota High School an MHS did not participate. She declined to say why.

For next year’s event, she said the awarding will no longer be held on Sunday in order not to take away family time. The awarding will also take place one week after the judging to allow Rota and Tinian teachers and students to prepare for their trip to Saipan.

Reyes said the awarding will be held at a hotel.

The islandwide science fair started in 1990 but stopped in 1996. It was revived last year.

PSS will pay for the expenses of the 18 students who will compete on Guam. They will have four chaperons.
