“I would like to start programs and trainings for different posts that will be vacated once the guest workers pull out. This is important and we have funds available for trainings,” Sablan said during the Rotary Club meeting at the Hyatt Regency Saipan yesterday.
He said local residents need training for jobs in preparation for the full implementation of the federalization law, which will restrict the hiring of guest workers in the CNMI.
“I want the people of the commonwealth to get jobs like bookkeeping, accounting and other jobs because they can do it, and not be given jobs because they have no jobs,” he said.
“We need to start planning with the concept that many or most of the guest workers will have to leave, and that time will come,” Sablan said.
He said there has been no objection to his proposal to get an extra 180 days before federal immigration control begins in the CNMI.
“Gov. Benigno Fitial needs to ask for the 180-day extension, and if he asks for it I think he’ll get it,” Sablan said.
