During his trip to Washington, D.C. last month, Fitial carried a letter addressed to Napolitano requesting for the delay.
He said he sought audience with Napolitano but they failed to meet.
But Fitial said he did get the chance to meet with Napolitano during a reception at the White House.
“I said Janet, ‘What do you think?’ She said, ‘We will work it out.’ ”
Fitial, who sued the U.S. government over the federalization law, said he hasn’t heard any strong opposition to his request.
Napolitano, a former governor and attorney general of Arizona, is scheduled to meet with the U.S. House Subcommittee on Insular Affairs to discuss the governor’s request.
Today, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, which is under Homeland Security, will inaugurate its Application Support Center in Garapan.
USCIS Honolulu District Director David Gulick said in a statement that the center will allow people in the CNMI to provide their fingerprints and other biometrics without going to Guam.
Gulick said the center is part of the federalization law’s implementation.
