MHS 1 beats SSHS to win girls soccer championship

MARIANAS High School 1 outplayed Saipan Southern High School, 4-1, to win the girls high school division of the NMIFA-PSS Interscholastic Soccer League on Saturday at the NMI Soccer Training Center.

At the start of the match, both teams relentlessly went for the kill. After 15 minutes of exchanges, Saipan Southern High School finally broke through  and found Summer Manahane open for the finish to give SSHS the lead, 1-0.

But MHS 1 continued to keep their heads up high and eventually  returned the favor at the 24th minute mark thanks to Alyssya Angeles whose goal tied the game, 1-1, before the halftime break.

In the second half, MHS 1 went on an offensive led by Jannah Casarino to grab the lead, 2-1.

With many skilled players, MHS 1 was not shy to move the ball around, creating several shot opportunities.

At the 41st minute mark, MHS 1’s Tamia Kileleman-Hix joined the scoreboard while team mate Amaya Reyes followed through just two minutes later for a comfortable 4-1 lead.

With little time left, SSHS failed to ignite a rally and went down in  defeat.

MHS 1’s Alyssya Angeles was named the Finals Most Valuable Player. She was a key player in the midfield, creating chances and goal opportunities throughout the match.

For her part, SSHS’ Summer Manahane was awarded with the Golden Boot for scoring a total of nine goals in five matches.
