Schweiger will be acting AG for five days

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, in a memorandum yesterday, said he is appointing Assistant Attorney General Thomas J. Schweiger to be the acting attorney general from March 7 to 11.

Baka has been the CNMI’s acting AG since September of last year when then-AG Matthew Gregory resigned.

The governor hasn’t formally nominated Baka to become the next attorney general.

Rep. Rosemond B. Santos, R-Saipan and chairwoman of the House Committee on Judiciary and Governmental Operations, said her panel has yet to hear from the administration regarding her request for an explanation of Baka’s appointment.

In related news, the governor designated deputy director Mark S. Pangelinan as acting director of the Emergency Management Office from yesterday to March 14.

Joaquin P. Omar, the deputy special assistant-EMO, is on an official trip during the period.

“Please extend your full cooperation to Mr. Pangelinan as he assumes these additional duties,” the governor said in his memorandum.
