Motorist gets 40 days in Palau for DUI

Tobias Isidoro Ngiramechelchalb appeared for a plea hearing in court and pleaded guilty to DUI and reckless driving.

The charge of speeding was dismissed in exchange of his guilty plea.Senior Judge Honora Remengesau-Rudimch sentenced him to one year of imprisonment, all suspended except for 40 days.Ngiramechelchalb was ordered to start serving his jail term on Monday, March 23, at 6 p.m.He will be on work release from April 2 to 11 and from April 22 to May 1 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.He was also placed on supervised probation and ordered to pay a fine of $600.His driver license was suspended until March 19 next year.Ngiramechelchalb will perform 30 hours of community service, 12 hours of which will be spent in an alcohol safety action program at the Bedochel Center.Ngiramechelchalb was driving a gray SUV on Dec. 31, 2008 and was heading toward Medalaii when pulled over by a patrol officer for speeding.Police said Ngiramechelchalb also failed the sobriety test.
