Zoning Board ready to cite violators

Adult businesses were given until the end of February to comply with the signs and outside appearance required by the Saipan Zoning Law of 2008.

Acting Zoning Administrator Therese Ogumoro said there will be no extension of the deadline.

The law imposes a maximum fine of $1,000 a day until the violator complies.

Ogumoro said over the past few weeks, zoning officials have been visiting adult businesses to help them comply with the law.

Ogumoro said they will re-visit these establishments on Thursday.

“If we see no improvements, we will issue a violation notice to them,” Ogumoro said.

Since the Zoning Office surveyed adult businesses in Garapan last Feb. 24, Ogumoro said only a few establishments have been cooperative.

At least 10 businesses have started changing their establishment’s signs and appearance to comply with the law.

Outgoing Zoning Administrator Steve Tilley has said that signs and appearances of businesses that have been around before Feb. 1, 2008 and not categorized as adult businesses may retain them.

Under the zoning law, advertisements, displays and other promotional materials of adult businesses cannot be shown or exhibited to the general public.

The exterior portions must not display flashing lights, neon lighting or other internally illuminated signs.

The text of primary and secondary signs should always be in English.

In case non-English text is necessary, it should be an exact translation from English.
