Teen selected for Junior Statesmen Summer School needs community support

Alicia Yen, a 15-year-old sophomore at Marianas High School, found out last week that she has been selected to attend the 2009 session of the Junior Statesmen Summer School at Stanford University in California.

But she has very little time to raise the money to pay her room, board, travel and other expenses.

While her family is paying half, Yen must raise the balance.

This local high school leader is hitting the local service club circuit, and seeking any other financial support she can get.

Anyone wishing to make an individual sponsorship to help Yen can send a check to: Admissions Director, The Junior Statesmen Summer School, 400 South El Camino Real, Suite 300, San Mateo, CA 94402 or contact Alicia at (670) 287-5459.

Check are to be made payable to the Junior Statesmen Foundation and include a note that Alicia Yen is the intended beneficiary.

The 69th annual session of the Junior Statesmen Summer School will be held from June 28-July 19.

While there, students take college-level courses in American government and speech.

They also participate in nightly student debates of controversial public policy issues in a congressional workshop.

Highlighting the month-long session will be frequent meetings with a high-level group of leaders from government, business and the media.

This nonpartisan speakers program gives future leaders a chance to share ideas with today’s political powerbrokers.

Yen hopes to study law and politics in college. She is particularly excited about experiencing a sneak preview of college life at the summer school.

Yen was accepted into this prestigious program because of her outstanding academic record and potential leadership.

She is not only a good student — she is also active in extra-curricular activities such as the National Forensic League, Lincoln Douglas Debate, We the People, Cross Country and swimming team.
