Sex offenders urged to update registration

DPS spokeswoman Lei Ogumoro said sex offenders in the CNMI who have not registered or updated their documents with the registry should do so to avoid up to a year of imprisonment and up to $1,000 in fines.

“Any person convicted of a sexual crime is required under Public Law 11-104 to register as sex offenders with DPS,” Ogumoro said.

Public Law 11-104 mandates DPS, the Adult Probation Office and the Office of Parole to register, update, photograph, fingerprint and keep on file all information about these offenders and to share, coordinate and update other affected law enforcement agencies.

Sex offenders are persons convicted of criminal offenses against victims who are minors, or are convicted of sexually violent offenses, sexual offenses, and other charges.

Last year’s records showed over a hundred individuals registered as sex offenders in the CNMI.

DPS is yet to upload the complete list of registered sex offenders with photographs and other relevant information on the DPS Web site, www.dps.gov.mp., pending some issues to be addressed first.

Ogumoro earlier said DPS was regularly updating its registry of sex offenders because sex offenders could easily change addresses, contact numbers, vehicles and employment status due to the size of this island.
