Guam cultural dancers perform at Hopwood

Kulu Natibu performed traditional Chamorro dances as well as contemporary interpretations.

Benjie Santiago, Guam teacher and choreographer, said this is the third year they have visited Saipan to perform cultural dances.

“We want to strengthen Chamorro culture,” he said.

Santiago said they want to inspire students to join cultural activities instead of creating trouble in the community.

This year, he said, they have 22 dancers, sixth to eighth graders, of  Agueda Iglesias Johnson Middle School.

Kulu Natibu will perform during  the four-day Flame Tree Arts Festival, which starts today.

Hopwood Junior High School vice principal John Pialur said cultural presentations have a great impact on the young  generation and raises awareness regarding the need to preserve and promote local culture.

Pialur said their school’s teachers and staff have been very active in promoting local culture.
