The French Polynesian Institute of Statistics has released its tourism report for February, showing a drop of 30 percent in tourism numbers compared to the same month last year.
Just over 10,370 tourists came to French Polynesia last month, which is the lowest figure reported since a slump in 1996.
The institute has also recorded a significant drop in overnight visitors, with almost a third of all visitors staying for just half a day.
The cruise ship sector has been worst affected, reporting at least a 60 percent loss in business.
French Polynesia’s economy is heavily dependent on the tourism industry, which accounts for about a quarter of gross domestic product.
