Senate lauds Tinian JROTC cadets

The Senate recently adopted  a resolution recognizing and congratulating the team for advancing to the College Options Foundation’s 2009 JRTOC Leadership and Academic Bowl Finals.

JROTC Instructor Ssg. Roger Thompson told Variety yesterday that the resolution will further motivate them.

“That’s a moral booster to us,” he said.

The cadets have been studying and training even during weekends, he added.

Thompson said the cadets are confident that they can hurdle rigorous competition tests on leadership, science, history, and citizenship, current world and national events as well as SAT and ACT type of questions.

The team is composed of Cadets 1st Lt. John Ramos, Cpl. Mary Hocog, Sgt. Alana Takasi, and  Sgt. Richeena Farrel.

He said the Tinian academic team is one of the 24 that will compete in the finals at the George Mason University in Washington, D.C. from June 26 to 30.

“This competition creates great opportunities for the JROTC cadets by demonstrating the academic abilities of JROTC students while instilling the values of citizenship, academic competition and college opportunity,” stated the Senate resolution introduced by Sen. Jude U. Hofschneider, R-Tinian.

Last month, the Tinian High School’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps bested 36 others and become this year’s winner in the 13th Brigade Cadet Command academic competition.

The Senate, Hofschneider said, wishes the Tinian High School JROTC academic team members the best of luck in the upcoming competition and in their future endeavors.
