The recount was sanctioned after incumbent Sen. Moses Nelson filed a complaint with the Election Commission regarding “irregularities” cited in two ballot boxes: one from Nomwin municipality and the other from Ruo municipality.
A recount was conducted on March 24 by a special committee established by the National Election Office which found that Tony Otto was the winning candidate.
The special committee found that the results of the tabulation of the two ballot boxes were accurate and were not tampered with.
The “irregularity” cited was that Nelson garnered not even a single vote in Ruo municipality but this was confirmed by the recount.
