CUC: 2 gallons of water lost every minute to leaks

Melvin Tudela, repair and maintenance supervisor for the CUC water and wastewater division, said repair is very important in their work.

Tudela, who completed recently the repair of the leak at the Tun Herman Pan Road, said whenever there is a leak in the mainline it will affect the water level in the reservoir of the area.

Sometimes, he said, they have to use heavy equipment to dig the pavement.

“The completion of repair may be delayed if there’s no available materials,” he added.

Gus Camacho, who also supervises  wastewater problems for CUC, said they are gradually replacing the asbestos pipes with PVCs, which are made from plastic and vinyl.

While working at the damaged wastewater pipeline at the back of San Jose Mart, Camacho said they have to use an alternative pump to remove wastewater and maintain the flow of sewerage.

He said they have to immediately repair any leaks to prevent overflowing and clogging of wastewater in the lateral line.

CUC water and wastewater division operation manager Mariano Iglecias said despite their lack of materials, “we are able to accomplish a lot of things because we have good team work.”

He said his division is using available parts and materials to address the immediate concerns of the public.
