Prior to the election of officers, each of the four island precincts selected two of their members to represent them in a group from which the officers would be elected from.
Those elected were Irene Futumai from Precinct 12 as president; Pilar Laecheilug, Precinct 15, vice president; Johanna Malmai, Precinct 13, secretary; and Elizabeth Tairuwepiy, Precinct 14, treasurer.
One of the goals they wish to achieve is to have the association’s name registered and be recognized as a women group.
The only known women groups to have registered in Yap are the Yap Women Association, and the Ulithi Women Association.
The membership of the new Neighboring Islands Women Association covers the whole Outer Islands of Yap from Ngulu Island in the west all the way to Satawal to the east.
In the meantime, the group is working closely with Yap Women Association to speed up the registration process so they would be able to seek outside funding for projects that will benefit their island communities.
