Palau has issued a health alert for swine flu.
Health Minister Dr. Stevenson Kuartei told reporters that although there is no reported case in Palau, a Task Force has been convened to beef up screening of passengers entering the country.He said activating the swine flu task force is a preventive measure to contain the new strain of swine flu that has become a global health threat.The task force is again convening on Wednesday to step up preventive measure on the disease.The World Health Organization was treating the outbreak as “a public health emergency of international concern” and asked all countries to step up screening of passengers.Kuartei said deaths have been reported in Mexico and the United States.Symptoms of swine flu are sudden fever above 38 degrees (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit), cough, headache, aching joints, nasal congestion and general fatigue.Kuartei said vomiting and diarrhea are also symptoms.As preventive measure, it is best to wear a mask. Do not greet someone with a kiss or handshake; do not share food, cutlery or glasses. Ventilate homes and offices, keep clean common items such as telephones.
