In a letter of intent signed on April 19, Tudela and the mayor of Guangzhou agreed that they will provide visa-related services to Chinese citizens who would like to visit Saipan.
The details of this cooperation have yet to be discussed by the concerned agencies of Saipan and Guangzhou.
Tudela said he wants to promote the friendship between China and Saipan and develop economic cooperation between them.
During his nine-day visit in China last month, Tudela said he signed friendly-city agreements with Chuxiong in Yunnan province and Guangzhou.
Tudela said Chuxiong Mayor Yuan Peng expressed interest in exploring investment opportunities on Saipan.
“They will start bringing tourists this summer,” he added.
In an interview, the mayor said although he is not a representative of the Marianas Visitors Authority, he helped advertise Saipan as an ideal tourist destination in the Pacific region.
In their letter of intent, Tudela and Yuan Peng stated that they want to promote bilateral exchanges and cooperation between their cities.
The cooperation, they said, will involve agriculture, trade, science, technology, the arts, education, medicine and tourism.
