Reservists home for 12-day R&R

SSgt. Francisco Ada and Sgt. Kelby Royal are two of the five Reservists who attended yesterday’s Memorial Week proclamation signing, and their three other companions will be joining the Memorial Day activities at the CNMI Veterans Cemetery in Marpi on May 25.

“We will be going back to Kuwait sometime next week,” Ada said.

He is spending his vacation with his family. Ada has an 18-year-old son and a 15-year-old daughter.

The servicemembers were deployed last year and their mission will end sometime in August or later this year.

Ada said the troops are doing well in Kuwait, where they are mostly providing convoy security.

Although Kuwait is safer than Iraq and the Afghanistan, anything could happen to them, he added.

Yesterday, Ada received a packet containing 78 phone cards from the Military Order of Purple Hearts to be distributed to the CNMI servicemembers in the Middle East.

Ada said phone cards are greatly appreciated by servicemembers.

CNMI Military/Veterans Affairs Executive Officer Ruth Coleman said each of the phone cards contain 60 minutes of airtime.

“These phone cards can go a long way to help ease the loneliness of our servicemembers by calling their families and loved ones here,” Coleman said.

She added that VFW Post 3457 also distributes phone cards to the servicemembers.
