Headlining the event will be the Marianas Idol, Charter Day Dance Crew, and Battle of the Bands competitions.
NMC held auditions for the competitions earlier this week, and five finalists were selected for Marianas Idol, three teams for the Charter Day Dance Crew contest, and three groups for the Battle of the Bands.
The Charter Day festivities will also be showcasing the talent and performances of several well-known groups on the island, including Uncle Ben’s, local dance group Inatuas Cultural Dancers, Carolinian Warriors, and Kings & Dreamers.
Tonight’s event will include a performance from local entertainer Maggie Naputi and the Go For Broke Band.
In addition to the exciting entertainment, there will also be several vendors featuring island delicacies, specialty drinks, and other items for sale.
Food, snacks, and drinks will be sold at 3’s, Poons, Magie’s, Shirley’s Coffee Shop, Cherry, Champs, Mr. Smoothie, Java Joes, Lynn’s, Alliance, Sierra’s, the NMC Library Legendary Guild, the Chamorro Club, the Carolinian Cultural Club, the NMC Spirit Squad, and the Upward Bound Program.
Clothing and other accessories will be sold by the NMC Bookstore, Fotten Gaga, and The Set.
Other booths will have games for kids.
The NMC Recruitment Committee will also be hosting a booth at the celebration. Individuals seeking to find out more information or enroll in the 2009 summer and fall semesters can pick up applications and waivers for the application and placement test fees at the booth.

Parade of Books
THOUSANDS of dollars are up for grabs as local elementary schools prepare to compete in the Fourth Rotary Club of Saipan’s Parade of Books, a media release said.
The event is scheduled for May 9 at the MHS gymnasium, 2 p.m., and is open to all public and private schools.
Through the Parade of Books, school children have the opportunity to come together, get dressed in costume, and play the magical characters they read about.
The Rotary Club encourages all students to continue to read, imagine and learn all about the great wide world we live in.
The Parade of Books is a Rotary children’s event aimed at promoting literacy in schools and in the home.
Rotary Club president Ben Babauta said, “Together with our Sky Team partner Northwest Airlines/Delta we look forward to another exciting event.”
Sophia Walk
THE 10th Sophia Walk and World Walking Day will be held on Sunday, May 10.
The free registration starts at 7 a.m. at the Carolinian Utt pavilion in Garapan. Water station and fruits will be available. Souvenir event shirts will be on sale also.
Organizers are expecting a contingent from the Nippon Turtle Association of Japan to grace the event.
For their exemplary support for the past 10 years since the inception of the Sophia Walk, the Marianas Visitors Authority will present a certificate of appreciation to Nippon Turtle and some of their members will receive a honorary certificate as “ambassadors of goodwill.”
The presentation will be around 9:30 a.m. after the walk at the Carolinian Utt.
In addition, Marinas Walking Association has also prepared a special giveaway for all the mothers, as the day coincides with Mothers’ Day.

Yap to join Guam fair
COLONIA, Yap (Yap State Government) — The Yap Visitors Bureau has been recruiting 20 people with specialty in cultural activities and crafts to represent Yap in the Guam/Micronesian Island Fair slated to take place at the Ypao Beach on Guam from Oct. 16 to 18.
YVB said qualified individuals interested to take part in event should stop by at the bureau’s office at Bldg#1 YVB Main Dr. in Yap.

Those who come in for registration should bring along an airline seat security deposit of $30 which will be handed over to Continental.
The rest of the payments of the airfare tickets will be due at a later date before the ticketing process.
Continental Micronesia is offering special airfare between Yap and Guam for 20 participants.
The delegation from Yap could possibly depart for Guam on Oct. 14 so it will have time to meet and discuss the planned activities for the event.
Organizers of the event only allow for five free nights of hotel accommodation and trolley passes. Free meal coupons will be used during the three-day event at the fair ground.
Water outage in San Vicente
(CUC) — The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. announces a water outage in San Vicente affecting customers residing behind San Vicente church area on Saturday, May 9, from 7:30 a.m. until Sunday, May 10, at 6:30 p.m.
The CUC water division distribution maintenance crew is scheduled to work on the San Vicente reservoir to seal all holes and openings, inspect, clean and disinfect the storage tank.
This required work is necessary to protect treated stored water and provide improved overall water quality for public consumption.

THE NMI Museum will kick off its weekly “Art at the Museum” activity this Saturday, May 9, at the grounds of the museum across from the Sugar King Park in Garapan.
The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday. The activity is open to all CNMI artists and crafts-makers. All artwork produced in the CNMI is acceptable for display or sale, as well as, any products featuring the designwork of artists working in the CNMI.
Artists will be required to bring what they need to display their work. This may be as simple as tables and chairs, or may include a tent or other display items. Registration is $5 if made one week in advance, or $8 afterward. Artists may register on the morning of the event.
