GOP stalwart joins Covenant slate

In an interview during the ruling party’s gathering at the Minatchom Atdao on Saturday, Teregeyo, the Republican Party’s Precinct 1 chairwoman and former GOP first vice president, said she had been thinking of seeking a Senate seat as early as four years ago.

But she said she had to give in to her GOP colleagues who also wanted to run for senator.

She decided to help Pete A. Tenorio win a second term as Washington representative.

She recalled that in 2007, her supporters wanted her to run for senator, but as a GOP precinct club leader, she said she had to help the party consolidate for the midterm elections.

Under Teregeyo’s leadership, the GOP won in Precinct 1 in the 2007 elections, paving the way for the Republicans to become, once again, the majority party in the House.

Teregeyo, a House member from 1992 to 2000 and was elected among the delegates in the National Republican Convention last year, said she had set aside her own plans twice for the sake of her party mates and devoted her time to keep the party intact.

But she said she was appalled by the disloyalty that many Republicans demonstrated during the congressional delegate election last year.

Instead of rallying behind the party’s candidate, Pete A. Tenorio, she said some Republicans even flaunted their support for non-GOP candidates.

Some pretended to be loyal to the party, but silently supported another candidate, she said.

Teregeyo said she felt she was stabbed in the back and now doubts the loyalty of many Republicans to their own party.
