Manamko’ to hold annual conference today

The event is part of the observance of Older America Month this May, which has the theme “Living Today for a Better Tomorrow.”

“As always, we strive to assist our elders with support, services and aid to help overcome the challenges our senior citizens face today,” Mondala said.

She said the conference will start at 9 a.m. and end at 1:30 p.m. in the Raraina Dining Room of the Aqua Resort Club.

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial is the guest speaker.

Walter Manglona, Aging Office program coordinator, said they invited the center’s physician Dr. Janna Wilgus to be the keynote speaker.

Senior citizens from Rota and Tinian will also join the conference.

Wilgus will talk about regular exercises that benefit older adults and other health issues, Mondala said.

She said Dr. Davir Hardt of Hardt Eye clinic will talk about eye care.

Wilgus said regular exercise is associated with decreased mortality and age-related illnesses in older adults. However, he added, “up to three-fourth of the older adult population do not  exercise at recommended levels.”

She wants to motivate the older adult population to initiate a regular exercise routine.

Manglona said it is important for the manamko; to know more about  physical exercise and its health benefits.

Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Cecilia T. Celes said the conference should is also for the community as a whole.

“Let us rededicate ourselves to taking a healthier stance in our lives as well as the lives of those in our community to help build a better today for the future of the commonwealth,” Celes said.

She urged the community to  respect the elders, and “cherish the moment of opportunities to listen to their stories, heed their words of wisdom and enjoy time with them….”
