FSM’s Mori submits economic panel bill

FSM has two representatives on the five-member committee.

Currently, the law limits the president to nominate one member who is affiliated, by virtue of his work, with the national government.

The other member is to be selected from a shortlist of four nominees from the state governments.

Mori said JEMCO’s decisions are crucial to the overall economic and social well-being of the FSM and it is therefore imperative that the national government selects suitable and qualified representatives who will make wise decisions.

There is an anomaly in the present selection process which deprives the FSM from finding the ideal representatives, he said.

The president warned against adverse relations with the states.

“Involving the state governors in the selection of the second nominee, I believe, could adversely affect our working relations with the state governments, particularly where a nominee by a state is rejected.”

Involving the state governments can be achieved by consultation, Mori said.

He said his proposed amendments will rectify the “anomalies” by expanding the scope of selection and gearing toward finding the most qualified and suitable FSM representatives

Currently, Secretary of Foreign Affairs Lorin Robert is FSM’s only sitting member on the JEMCO.
