Last month, the organizers of the annual event were told that the budget would have to be trimmed down to $17,000 due to financial challenges that the government was facing.
But during a meeting yesterday, Lt. Gov. Eloy Inos assured Agriculture Fair chairman Isidoro T. Cabrera that the event will get $20,000, the same amount appropriated last year.
The 28th Saipan Agriculture Fair which was tentatively set for May 23 but was moved to June 6, Cabrera said.
Now that they are getting the full amount, he said this year’s event will perhaps be better than last year’s.
In 2008, the cash prizes for the winning produce or animals were $50 for cattle, $25 for pigs and $10 for others.
The fair was not held in 2006 and 2007.
The funding for 2007 was used last year in an event that drew the participation of 60 farmers and ranchers.
Cabrera said they expect that a similar number of farmers and ranchers will attend this year’s fair which aims to showcase the potentials of different farming activities.
