AmeriCorps grant added to stream of federal funds for NMI

The grant will go to a PSS AmeriCorps program which provides peer-to-peer mentoring, tutoring, and counseling sessions for at-risk students.

“Serving in AmeriCorps is a wonderful way to contribute to our community and meet local educational needs,” said Sablan. “Those who are doing this work should be congratulated for their service and their dedication to our community.

“We are also very proud of the Public School System for putting together their successful application for AmeriCorps funds and we look forward to hearing about the experiences of students and volunteers alike.”

In addition to this grant, the Corporation for National and Community Service is setting aside funding to provide Education Awards for the AmeriCorps members serving in this program.

After completing a full term of service, AmeriCorps members will receive an education award of $4,725, which they can use to pay for college or to repay student loans.

AmeriCorps is a national service program that engages Americans of all ages in service to meet critical national needs in education, public safety, environmental, and other areas. Its 75,000 members serve in more than 4,000 non-profit and faith-based organizations across the country.

Since 1994, more than 574,000 AmeriCorps members have provided 718 million hours of service through the program.

Last month, President Obama signed into law the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, a bill that will increase opportunities for Americans to serve and strengthen social innovation and volunteer generation in America’s non-profit sector, enabling even more Americans to give back to their communities.

Sablan was one of the 12 original cosponsors of the bill in the U.S. House of Representatives.
