Fishery council to tackle update on marine issues

Agenda items during the meetings include fishery issues,  coral reef conservation projects, marine education and training program, and the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument among other topics.

The meetings will be held in different locations by various council committees.

Public meetings are scheduled as follows:

• Mariana Archipelago Advisory Panel. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 13, Fiesta Resort & Spa, Saipan.

• Mariana Archipelago Plan Team. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 15. Fiesta Resort & Spa, Saipan.

• Mariana Archipelago Regional Ecosystem Advisory Committee for the CNMI. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 16. Fiesta Resort & Spa, Saipan.

• Mariana Archipelago Regional Ecosystem Advisory Committee for Guam. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 18. Guam Hilton Resort & Spa, Tumon Bay.

• 101st Scientific and Statistical Committee. 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 20-22. King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

• 145th Council Meeting. Standing Committees: 1 to 5 p.m., July 22.  Full Council: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. July 22; 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. July 23; 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 24; 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 25. King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel.

• Fishers Forum “Taking Marlin off the Menu?” 6:30 to 9 p.m. July 23. King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel.

Major agenda items include:

• Non-commercial fishing in the Pacific Marine National Monuments;

• Hancock groundfish moratorium;

• Main Hawaiian Islands bottomfish total allowable catch;

• Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission bigeye quota;

• Hawaii tuna quota monitoring;

• Hawaii nonlongline pelagic fishing at Cross Seamount and NOAA weather buoys;

• Catch shares, coral reef survey methodologies; and

• Cooperative research, review of recommendations from the Council’s advisory bodies.
