The Commonwealth Zoning Board earlier defended the law after a group of business operators distributed copies of a petition calling for the suspension of the law’s implementation.
House Local Bill 16-39 aims to temporarily suspend the zoning law to allow the zoning office to address “the unintended consequences of its implementation.”
The zoning office, the bill stated, can propose revisions and amendments to the law.
According to Torres, R-Saipan, despite many improvements that have been made as a result of the zoning law, “local businesses encounter issues relating to the implementation of the zoning regulations that appear to be unintended.”
Therese Ogumoro, who served as acting zoning administrator prior to the arrival of new administrator Victor Barrett, stated that the implementation of Saipan Zoning Law of 2008 should transform the commonwealth into an attractive, safer and organized environment for residents and visitors.
The zoning office, she said, will make sure that the law’s implementation will be done correctly.
