16 join women’s art exhibit

The CNMI Women’s Art Exhibit, which opened on Monday, will run until July 4, according to Arts Council coordinator Parker Yobei.

He said they are expecting the number of participating artists to go up in the next few days.

He said the CNMI has about 30 to 40  female artists.

“Although many have confirmed participation, they have regular jobs and are too busy to deliver their artwork,” Yobei said.

He added that some of the artists are still completing their artwork.

“The artists are hard-pressed for time since they sold a lot of their work at the Flame Tree Arts Festival last April,” he said.

On display now are  traditional crafts, beadwork products, paintings, photographs, traditional household tools, canoes, hand-made jewelry, books and reading materials on Northern Marianas history.

“We would like to invite everybody to drop by and buy artwork,” Yobei said.

The exhibit, he added, aims to promote the talents of the islands’ female artists.

Yobei said weekdays “are always kind of slow” at the gallery because most of the visitors can drop by only during lunch break.

But the gallery usually has several visitors and customers on Saturdays, he added.

Among the featured artists are Norlyn Bitco, Lucille Kraufer, Debbie Winkfield, Emy Bugarin, Karen Cabrera, Rose Marie Diaz, Cynthia Takesi, Wan Lee, Dawn Crystal, Flowerpot Salas, Tokei Mojica, Cherry Camigla, Ginni A. Bachan, Fracis Kaipat and Lucia Ayuyu.

The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday, and 9 to 12 noon on Saturdays.

The gallery is closed on Sundays and holidays.
